Psychotherapy: The main goal of psychotherapy is to help the person cope with painful memories and manage the physical and emotional reactions and stress, and there are several techniques that can help. Regardless of the technique used, it is useful to teach the patient about human responses to trauma. Psychotherapy and education can help family members understand the disorder and deal with its effects.

If you had a terrifying experience, this can change their world view. Dealing with the stress of a traumatic event may be more difficult if he is a victim and yourself focused on your experience as a victim. If psychotherapy reinforces this belief, can be counterproductive. In psychotherapy, you can recognize that strategy, violence and evil are human experiences, the desire for revenge or compassion is normal, but many parts of his life remain under their control. The goal is to help lead an optimal life despite his frightening experience.

The following are techniques that can help:

- Psychodynamic psychotherapy: focuses on how trauma has affected their ability to manage emotions and to calm their anxiety in stressful times. Psychotherapy considers the unique experiences of your life. People often become overwhelmed by a specific memory of trauma, so it’s not a good idea to devote much attention to the trauma itself, especially in the early stages of psychotherapy. In the final stages, when you feel more secure, you deal with ideas and situations that stand in their way and give him back the concept before I had of him. Rebuilding trauma should be a goal to meet.

- Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps to try to change the thinking that follows a trauma. There are several types that are intended to instruct a person to recognize the origin of the symptoms and modify their physical and psychological reactions that resemble the trauma.

Treatment may take a long time, which could explain the high rate of people leaving. Some researchers have found that 25% of people with PTSD stop treatment. However, if treatment is continued (usually a combination of medication and psychotherapy) is possible to see improvement.

Drugs: people respond to severe stress in very different ways. Your doctor may recommend medications for symptoms prominent. There are numerous types of drugs commonly prescribed to treat PTSD.

Antidepressants: selective inhibitors of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclic antidepressants and many newer antidepressants used to treat chronic anxiety, depression and irritability. SSRIs include sertraline (Zoloft), paroxetine (Paxil), fluoxetine (Prozac) and citalopram (Celexa). If an SSRI does not work or can not tolerate the side effects of this medicine, your doctor may suggest one of the relatively new antidepressants such as venlafaxine (Effexor), or one of the older tricyclic antidepressants such as imipramine (Tofranil) and amitriptyline (Elavil).

Anxiolytics: Benzodiazepines are a family of drugs that works well in treating anxiety, including symptoms of PTSD. These include diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin) and lorazepam (Ativan). These medications provide quick relief for symptoms of anxiety, however, many patients fear that these drugs cause addiction. Fortunately, at least in a long-term study, veterans with PTSD did not develop atypical problems when the medicated with benzodiazepines. Alternatively, doctors may prescribe the anxiolytic buspirone (Buspar). Buspirone takes longer than benzadiacepinas to take effect, but it might be safer in the long term in certain patients.

Mood stabilizers: are drugs used also for the treatment of mood problems. Are sometimes prescribed alone and in combination with other antidepressants or anxiolytics. Examples are valproic acid (Depakote) and lithium (sold in various brand names).

Adrenergic inhibitors: These are divided into two groups: alpha-adrenergic agonists (eg, prazosin and clonidine) and beta-blockers (like propranolol and metoprolol). These drugs alter the nerve pathways that cause the physical symptoms of anxiety such as trembling and rapid heartbeat perception. Although in theory such drugs could block the symptoms of PTSD, controlled studies have not yet proven effective in preventing this disorder.

Duration

By definition, PTSD symptoms must last at least a month. However, PTSD is not a problem can become prolonged. Symptoms may come and go for many years. For example, according to a study of prisoners of World War II, 29% of those who developed PTSD still had symptoms 40 years after the conflict.

Prevention

Some traumas can not be prevented, but can be a relief to receive advice and support therapy immediately after the event. Do not let others force you to describe the details of the trauma because such talks could re-expose to trauma reliving in his mind. It has been shown that the technique called “sessions for critical incident stress”, reduce the risk. In fact, there is evidence that may increase the risk of developing PTSD. In this technique are detailed questions about a traumatic experience.

Not all victims of trauma want to undergo this treatment and should be respected because most victims recover on their own with the support of family and friends. The treatment, however, should be available for those who do want to deploy it. After the traumatic situation, health professionals should focus first on the physical and emotional needs of the victim, giving you peace of mind and focusing on how to cope.

In addition to asking about the trauma that triggered the symptoms, your doctor will ask about your family history and ask you to describe both positive and negative experiences or traumatic. What’s happening now is very important. Here are some questions your doctor may ask you:

- What experiences were traumatic and what was your reaction?
- Have nightmares or frightening memories of trauma that invade your daily life?
- There are situations, conversations, people or things that remind you of the trauma? How do you react to these memories?
- What is your mood today?
- Do you feel irritable or nervous? Do you startle easily?
- Have sleep disturbance?
- Have difficulty concentrating?
- Have you lost interest in daily activities and leisure?
- There is something that causes more anxiety, as medical problems or stress?

Takes too much coffee or alcohol, smoke cigarettes or use drugs? (dependence and abstinence from drugs or alcohol can sometimes cause symptoms that mimic those of PTSD)
Can you describe your important relationships?
Get support from family or friends?
Your reaction about the future?
Your doctor will review if another problem is the root of your anxiety. You might have an anxiety disorder that is not PTSD (eg, panic disorder). Or maybe you have a mood disorder such as depression or bipolar disorder. Do not be surprised to hear that your doctor will ask about drug or alcohol abuse. If you have substance abuse problems, is essential to continue treatment.

In the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a group of distressing symptoms occur after a frightening incident. A person having directly experienced or witnessed a situation which must have included serious physical injury or threat of injury or death. By definition, trauma cause a strong experience of fear, fear or insecurity. It seems that some kind of psychological and physiological activation is the key to development of this disorder.

Some common triggers include:
- car accidents, air and boat accidents serious
- accidents at work
- natural disasters (tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions)
- robberies, muggings and shootings
- military combat (PTSD was diagnosed for the first time soldiers, also known as the name of shell-shock)
- rape, incest or child abuse
- hostage situations and hijackings
- political torture
- imprisonment in a concentration camp
- be a refugee

In the U.S., physical assault and rape are the most common triggers of PTSD in women, while military combat is the most common trigger of PTSD in men. The people directly affected by situations such as the attack on September 11, Hurricane Katrina or fighting in the war in Iraq or Afghanistan could trigger PTSD, but not most cases.

Acute PTSD: This term is used when symptoms develop within the first three months of the traumatic situation.

Delayed Onset PTSD: This term is used when symptoms emerge six months or more after the trauma.

Most people exposed to trauma do not develop a strong PTSD. The severity of the trigger is not always related to the severity of symptoms.

It is not known with certainty why some people are more likely than others to develop PTSD. Some may be at increased risk for PTSD due to genetic predisposition (hereditary) to a stronger reaction to stress. Others may be more likely to link memories everyday situations or stressful to leave the painful memories emerge. Other important factors are the personality, life experiences of other traumatic events of the person (especially in childhood) and current social support (having friends and family caring and concerned).

People with PTSD are likely to have personality disorder, and they’re more likely to have depression and substance abuse.

It is estimated that 1 to 3% of people in America have an attack of full PTSD, and another 5 to 15% have milder forms of the disease. Although PTSD can develop at any stage of life, the disorder occurs more frequently in young adults than any other group. This could be because young adults are more exposed to the types of triggers that can cause PTSD. The risk of developing PTSD is greater than the average humble people, single or socially isolated, perhaps because they have less emotional support and resources to help cope with difficult situations.

How did it happen? It turns out that scientists were conducting research with mice in which they wanted to detect the chemical compound to block the effect of stress on gastrointestinal function. And what they found, by chance, was that a chemical compound to induce hair growth by blocking a hormone related to stress alopecia (baldness).

Researchers say the findings show that a short course (single dose daily for five consecutive days) causes an astonishing growth of hair, at least in mice, which could lead to new treatment options for alopecia, or baldness, in humans.

While it clear that it is premature to make promises for the future, whether it will work well in people, the new method would only be useful against some types of baldness, particularly those related to stress.

Long been known that stress plays a key role not only in the gray hair, but also in their loss. Anyway the causes of hair loss are not completely understood. It is also believed to be related, among others, genes and male sex hormones or hormonal changes in women.

When hair loss occurs over time, generally occurs in humans following the hairline is receding hair and gradually to form the familiar “hits” shaped “M”. Also, the hair at the crown also begins to weaken until it is uninhabited, forming a “horseshoe” around the sides of the head.

Unlike men, baldness in women is presented by a decrease in volume and not by the appearance of so-called inputs. In them, the hair normally tuned mainly at the top of the head and the crown of the scalp, with a widening in the central part. Furthermore, it is rare that women are completely bald or almost completely, as if it happens to men.

When hair loss occurs in patches, is diffuse, it breaks the hair shaft or is associated with redness, pain, or rapid progression could be caused by other problems. In these cases, it is important to see a specialist (dermatologist) as soon as possible to find a solution.

Note that if the underlying cause of your hair fall is stress, this need not be permanent. Often if you reduce stress and control, you can regain your hair. Moreover, at present, there are several treatments for baldness, with the potential to bring successful results. Be sure to seek professional help if you’re worried.

And with this discovery, perhaps in the near future another chance your hair to grow back and feel more attractive.

Maybe in a few years can not tell you that stress will make you run out of hair, and all thanks to a finding by chance a group of researchers who studied the effect of stress on the digestive system found a chemical compound capable of combating such of baldness. The findings came in mice but open a new avenue in the search for an effective treatment for hair loss in people. Meanwhile, there will have to wait.

The hair is part of the face, a personal touch, something that we care and we appreciate it when you look good, we feel much more attractive does not it? When we lose it becomes a nightmare, especially for men, since it is estimated that half of them suffer from alopecia (baldness) after 50 years. Women are also concerned about hair loss, although less common baldness in women.

People who suffer from hair loss do everything possible to stop it: it is estimated that each year there are around 250 thousand hair transplants worldwide, according to data published by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, this includes people both sexes.

But what causes hair loss? One is the so famous stress rife in these days when time seems to achieve nothing, only to worry about. Stress can generate three different types of baldness:

- Alopecia areata: severe stress causes hair to fall out and stop growing.
- Telogen effluvium: due to emotional stress, the hair stops growing and falls to brushing or touching.
- Trichotillomania: When due to stress and anxiety, people feel an uncontrollable urge, an urge to pull hair.

In general, distinguished because it occurs suddenly and falls in parts or more than usual when washing.
This can be very distressing and disturbing, so it is one of the main challenges that you want to prevent and resolve. While continually conducting research to discover an effective treatment for baldness (all types), this time a group of researchers at the University of California at Los Angeles, United States, accidentally discovered a possible solution to the problem.

If you want to start a routine of physical activity, do not try to get as much exercise at once, all together and demanding more of what your body can do. You may remember that we’ve already given this suggestion in previous articles here on Life and Health, but it never hurts to repeat it, as experts recommend exercising regularly, maintaining routine over time and go increasing the level of activity as the body becomes stronger (but still, almost nobody is free from injury).

In general, many people who have a sedentary life, suddenly, they want to look better and lose those kilos or pounds. So begin with enthusiasm but at the same time, to do too much, taking risks that could be avoided.

Why? Because if you’re not used to exercise it is likely that your muscles are weak. This does not mean you’re weak but the body is unaccustomed to certain movements and if you demand that can suddenly make to injure, which is just the opposite of what you’re looking for, it’s look and feel better.

Of course, if you do not exercise long and one day you spend 15 minutes doing the Step, the same running on the treadmill and then crunches, it is likely that the muscles will be sore after walking or other activities.

This is normal and causes no complications. The problem is how you can tell when it is a characteristic of the exercise and hassle when it comes to an injury that requires you to suspend the exercise and even to seek medical treatment.

To be able to distinguish one condition or another’s pain, here we will tell you some things that may help:

- The discomfort of the so called “healthy pain” does not appear while you exercise but one or two days later. So the recommendation is to stop exercising if you feel pain while exercising.
- If you start exercising when you have discomfort or “pain healthy”, this will disappear after 10 or 15 minutes of exercise. Conversely, if an injury pain continues and may worsen.
- Most injuries that occur during exercise cause inflammation (swelling), which generally also accompany pain, redness of the skin. Muscle aches for the financial year do not cause inflammation or redness.
- Sometimes you may feel that these inflamed but not noticeable on the outside. In such cases, to realize if you have an injury you can try to move the joint resentful and buy it with the other. In general you can not move much, or not manage to extend, flex well, not cover the same area when trying to move in different directions. In addition, the injured party may be weaker.
- If pressing on any part you pain and this does not happen at the same point on the opposite side of the body, you may have an injury that needs medical attention.
- The joint pain rarely has to do with muscles. It is important to consult a specialist if you have pain in the knees, ankles, wrists or elbows.
- If you feel numbness or tingling anywhere, do not let go. That kind of feeling is usually related to compression of the nerves, indicating that you could have a serious injury.

The sooner you start to take care if you feel pain, faster disappear any problems. Note that most injuries heal on their own with rest, ice and if you apply if you hold high the injured site. However, if the pain does not go away after a week, consult a specialist who can show you the proper treatment. And of course, do not expect if you have any questions or if pain or swelling increases.

If you pay attention to your body and attend any injury quickly, you will return soon to your exercise routine and keep you healthy lifestyle you have chosen.

Symptoms of palpitations, elevated heart rate, tremor or nervousness are treated with beta blockers such as propranolol (Inderal). For anxiety and insomnia, your doctor may prescribe diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan) or a similar medication.

To stop the thyroid produce too much hormone, there are three possible treatments: antithyroid drugs, radioactive iodine and surgery.

For people with Graves’ disease, doctors usually begin with medications such as methimazole (Tapazole, Thiamazole) or propylthiouracil (sold as generic). Once thyroid hormone levels have normalized, you and your doctor can decide whether to continue taking the medication every day or opt for treatment with radioactive iodine.

Radioactive iodine is taken by mouth. Most experts recommend a dose high enough to completely stop the thyroid output of thyroid hormone. You should then take a daily thyroid medication for the rest of his life. Since people who receive radioactive iodine therapy store a small amount of radiation in the thyroid, these people need to avoid prolonged contact with pregnant women and children for several days after treatment. Radioactive iodine is concentrated in breast milk and women should stop breastfeeding if they opt for this therapy.

It is now rarely resort to surgery to treat Graves’ disease. However, people with very large goiters are less likely to respond well to antithyroid medication or radioactive iodine and may have a better result if most of the thyroid gland is removed surgically (called subtotal thyroidectomy).

Patients with signs of Graves’ disease in his eyes might have to put eye drops to keep them hydrated and sunglasses to protect them from sun, wind and dust. In people with severe eye symptoms may be necessary to glucocorticoid drugs, either to take them alone or in combination with radioactive treatments for the muscles that control eye movement. Symptoms of Graves’ disease in skin creams may be treated with glucocorticoids.
