Genetic variations in the number of copies is associated with obesity
Struan Grant, associate director of the Center for Applied Genomics at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, United States, is the senior author between complete genomes trabajo.Tras track looking for variations in the number of copies (deletions or duplications in DNA sequences) have given information that, although very little incident in the general population, suggests that individuals who carry certain variants have a much higher risk of being obese.
In a cohort of 1,080 obese European children, and with a control group of 2,500 people have been identified variants present only in obese children. Replicated the study of nearly 1,500 American children are overweight and confirmed that the 17 variations in the number of copies found, eight appear in both population groups, while the rest have only been observed in European populations.
The fact that two distinct breeds that share specific genetic information suggests that variations in the number of copies of certain genetic loci have a central role in the development of obesity, says Grant. One of these sites, located near the gene ARL15, had already been associated with an increased risk of coronary disease and type 2 diabetes due to elevated levels of adiponectin, a hormone linked to glucose control.

The Mexican government warned that the intake of caloric beverages, especially sugary, such as cola-generating increases the risk of obesity among the population regularly consume these products.
A study by the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) in Mexico notes that 21% of total energy consumption of adolescents and adults comes from these drinks and the average consumption of Mexicans “is unhealthy.”
“The high consumption of energy-containing beverages in Mexico contributes significantly to excessive energy consumption and is therefore an important factor in the development of overweight, obesity,” says the study. Read the rest of this entry »
