Symptoms usually occur only during the pressure change, and for a short time after the change. In severe cases, including serous otitis media, symptoms can last several weeks. The perforations of the eardrum often heal by themselves, but may take several weeks. You may have hearing loss for several weeks. Common symptoms of ear barotrauma include:
- earache
- a sensation of hearing tablets
- a need to crack your ears by swallowing, yawning or chewing gum

The more severe signs include:
- severe pain in the ear
- dizziness (vertigo)
- bleeding or fluid from the ear, in cases of perforated eardrum

Barotrauma

BarotraumaBarotrauma refers to injuries caused by excessive pressure of air and water, for example, flying or diving. It is common ear barotrauma. The generalized barotrauma, also called decompression sickness, affects the entire body.

The middle ear (includes the eardrum and the space behind it), has only one connection to the outside which is a thin channel called the Eustachian tube. This tube connects the ear to the back of the mouth. Swallowing can feel a click in the ears, this is due to a bubble of air moving through the eustachian tube. These bubbles are constantly moving into the middle ear, which balance the pressure inside the ear. The ear barotrauma occurs when these bubbles are totally or partially blocked.
