Biobank Helps People Find Cure Using Stem Cells
A biobank is a place where people can keep their body material in a safe condition. Babies, for example, are born with cord blood. Cord blood is very valuable because it can used to treat diseases. Studies reported that from 2,700 babies only one might need to use cord blood in treating diseases, while from 1,400 near family members only one might need to use it. However, since cord blood is able to be utilized by non family members many people can benefit from it.
A biobank obtains cord blood from newborn babies. The umbilical cord connects the baby to the mother and this is where the blood is obtained. This cord provides all the nutrients as well as oxygen to the foetus. Perhaps this is the main reason why the umbilical cord has high healing properties. Today, both the cord and placenta are collected and kept in the biobank so that they can be used to help treat diseases.
Stem cells are found effective in the curing of leukaemia and Alzheimer’s and cell stems can be found in cord blood. Additionally, cell stem is also proven effective in curing cerebral palsy. Recent studies found that there is a potential to treat diseases affecting spinal cord because stem cells is suspected to have the capacity in repairing spinal cord. As a matter of fact, there are many possibilities of curing diseases with the use of stem cells obtained from umbilical cord blood.
